Reflection: These words were penned before people had such an abundance of sugar in their diet. Cadbury was not available, nor sweetened drinks in abundance. Trekking alongside Aboriginal women in the north of Australia for long distances, gave me a sense of how precious sugar could be. With our necks craned high we searched for tiny stingless native bees, who made their sugarbag (honey) high in trees. After the effort of then axing down the tree to retrieve it we discovered a special sweetness. In Central Australia honey ants require the skilled hunter to find the right spot and dig a hole big enough to climb into and then to coax out the honey ants tunnelled throughout the earth. How sweet the taste! Maybe we need to spend more time and effort with God’s word and savour it to discover the truth of this verse: it is indeed sweet and satisfying for our deepest needs.
Prayer: Help me Lord to sit with you and your truths till it not only nourishes my soul but sweetens my outlook.
