Living Above the Mess

Day 7 of 14

CSB

Psalms 8:1-4

Psalm 8

God’s Glory, Human Dignity

For the choir director: on the Gittith. A psalm of David.

1Lord, our Lord,

how magnificent is your name throughout the earth!

You have covered the heavens with your majesty.

2From the mouths of infants and nursing babies,

you have established a stronghold

on account of your adversaries

in order to silence the enemy and the avenger.

3When I observe your heavens,

the work of your fingers,

the moon and the stars,

which you set in place,

4what is a human being that you remember him,

a son of man that you look after him?

Reflections:  Let Your Thoughts Consider His Works

One day, I was having a really bad time at work. Everything was going wrong and I was completely overwhelmed and ready to quit. The slimy pit was up to my eyeballs! So, I decided to go for a walk; getting out of the office would help me get out of the mess.  But as I walked out the front doors and into the park, the overwhelming thoughts came on the walk with me. They were on repeat in my head until I was rudely interrupted. An older lady walked straight up to me and said, “Isn’t that tree just gorgeous! When I consider the work of his fingers, I can’t help but praise!” It slapped me in the face and made me realise that Creation was crying out all around me as I walked in this beautiful park, yet my thoughts were still in the mud. Psalm 8 is calling you out of where you currently are to turn your thoughts onto the greatness of our God. Let the Heavens, the work of his hands: the moon, the stars, creation and the trees show you how majestic our God is.

Questions: How will you take this reminder from Psalm 8 to help you live above ‘the mess’ today?

Prayers:  As I remember this verse, I pray that you, God, would wash my thinking of the mud and open my eyes to see the work of your hands, Creation, the stars, the moon and let my mind be set upon how amazing and majestic you are.

3When I observe your heavens,

the work of your fingers,

the moon and the stars,

which you set in place,

4what is a human being that you remember him,

a son of man that you look after him?

5You made him little less than God

and crowned him with glory and honor.

6You made him ruler over the works of your hands;

you put everything under his feet:

7all the sheep and oxen,

as well as the animals in the wild,

8the birds of the sky,

and the fish of the sea

that pass through the currents of the seas.

9Lord, our Lord,

how magnificent is your name throughout the earth!
