Reflection: In looking at the story of mothers in the Bible, the story of Mary stands out as the ultimate story of an unexpected and miraculous birth. In this well known narrative, God chooses a lowly, young, humble girl to be the mother of his Son, the Messiah. In this passage, Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, exclaims of Mary, “blessed are you among women”! In her subsequent prayer, Mary glorifies God for choosing her to be the mother of the Messiah. Mary acknowledges God’s greatness saying, ‘His mercy extends to
those who fear him, from generation to generation. ‘ (Luke 1:50). Mary is aware of how blessed she is, to be chosen as the mother of the Messiah, as a crucial part in God’s plan of salvation for his people. She acknowledges that God brings down the proud and uplifts the humble. God had done great things for her, his humble servant, and she calls herself blessed.
Question: What stands out to you in Mary’s response to her unexpected motherhood?
Prayer: Dear Father God, with Mary, we glorify you, and rejoice in you, our God and Saviour. Thank you that your mercy extends to those who fear you, from generation to generation.
We praise you for the mighty deeds you perform, for bringing down those who are proud in their inmost thoughts, and lifting up the humble. You are a God who fills the hungry with good things. We praise you that in choosing Mary to be the mother of your Son, you remembered to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants for ever, just as you promised. Amen.
