Reflection: Elizabeth, a descendent of Aaron, was chosen by God to be the mother of the great prophet who would prepare the way for God’s chosen Messiah, Jesus. Yet Elizabeth’s story began with a familiar refrain – she and her husband were childless, and very old. Indeed, the people in her time may well have seen similarities between the famous story of Sarah and Abraham, and that of Elizabeth and Zechariah
– which would only emphasise the wonder and importance of what God did for them, in choosing them as the parents for John. They are described as ‘righteous in the sight of God’, and faithful to God and his commands. Elizabeth, although barren and past the age of childbearing, is chosen by God to be the mother of this important prophet. God blessed Elizabeth with a son when it seemed all hope of a child was gone. In granting Elizabeth a child in her old age, God changed her life from shameful to miraculous. God can and does act in ways that defy what we think is physically ‘possible’. God answers long held hopes and prayers, and he honours his people who are ‘righteous and faithful to him’.
Question: This story highlights many attributes of God. Which
of these encourages you the most?
Prayer: Dear God, we praise you for your power, that anything is possible for you, even granting an elderly couple a child of their own. Thank you for your grace and favour towards Elizabeth, in taking away her disgrace and giving her a child. Thank you for your grace and favour towards us, in taking away the disgrace of our sin through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, and granting us new and everlasting life. Amen.
