Reflection: Imperfect situations
It has been a very difficult time for many of us during this pandemic. In this psalm David recalls being in a city under siege – in peril, under attack for an unknown duration, with an uncertain outcome. Just like him, we can be tempted to cry “I am cut off from your sight!” Just like him, we can be in a hard situation that has been going on for a long time, with an uncertain end, and feel like God is not with us.
But just like David, we would be wrong.
Our cry for mercy will be heard. God’s help does not depend on what we can see or what we can feel. He is consistent, and so often we are not. We don’t know how God will work things for good, yet we can be sure he will. Romans 8:28 gives us assurance of that: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
In all things – that is a big call, and one only an all-powerful God can provide.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I am tempted to feel abandoned by you in difficult situations.
Thank you for reminding me that you hear my voice even when I cannot feel your presence.
I know I can bring all of my confusion and pain to you, because you are powerful and compassionate.
