Reflection: Imperfect knowledge
It is a mark of my ability to wander off the main point of a passage of scripture that when I read this – the preparation for Jesus’ last night with his disciples before the cross – I get captivated by what we are NOT told.
I wonder whether an unmentioned person was sent ahead to make the arrangements for the room, or did Jesus use an angel or a vision to get things ready?
The point is we don’t know.
There is so much we don’t know – our knowledge even about the life of Jesus is partial. This is just an example of the many things God has not told us. We “see through a glass darkly”, as the King James Version renders I Corinthians 13:12.
But as Article 6 of the Anglican Confession states, we can be assured that “Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation.” Scripture is perfectly sufficient.
Prayer: Dear Father, I cannot see all you are doing. Just as there was more going on in the story of the Last Supper, so too you are working in and around us. Thank you that you actively care for me and are active in my world.
