Day 5 of 7

CEV

Mathew 22:37-39

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[c] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[d] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”  Mathew 22:37-39NIV

Reflection: Relationships

Try describing who you are without mentioning other people – it is very difficult. Being around other people widens our perspectives, gives us purpose and shapes our identity. This is because we are made for relationships. The God who created us exists in eternal, intimate relationship as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. When Jesus summarises what it means to follow God, he says we must love God and love others. That is, we must be in relationship.

We long for good relationships, whether that’s with our family and friends, a boyfriend, girlfriend or spouse. Think of the latest movie you watched. Chances are, it was either about the pursuit of a relationship or about saving a relationship. It is only through God’s love of us that we can truly love others. Not only so, but God calls us to be part of his family, to grow and be in relationship with his people.

Prayer:

Dear God, I long for good and fulfilling relationships with others. Please teach me how to love the people around me. Help me to soak in your love for me and show me how to love you back. Amen.
