Finding the Real Jesus

Day 4 of 7

NIV

Mark 4:35–41

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”  Mark 4:35–41 NIV

Reflection: Even the wind and the waves

The mystery of who Jesus is unfolds in ever-growing layers of meaning and significance leading the reader on a path to greater understanding. The picture we are given is startling. This is no ordinary person. He shows himself to be the Lord over nature, over sickness and (as we’ll see in chapter 5) even death itself.

The disciples, who are witnessing all this remarkable activity, remain perplexed as to who Jesus really is. Their question, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” reveals their understandable shock at the power of God revealed in the man they are hanging around with. He is no ordinary teacher.

One important lesson they receive is that they can truly trust him and put their lives in his hands, even in the storms of life. We can do that too. “Why are you so afraid?” asks Jesus. It’s a question he asks all of us at some point.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, you have the world in your hands. Thank you that we can trust you no matter the storms we encounter. May we rest in your love and power today. Amen.
