Series Introduction
Mark’s Gospel poses the question ‘Who is Jesus?’, and moves the reader quickly towards an answer, challenging them to consider the implications of his identity. We see many varied reactions to Jesus – some are immediately opposed to him and offended by his claims, while others are irresistibly drawn to this teacher and healer. The true identity of Jesus and its implications are something of a puzzle, even for his disciples, as only gradually do they come to understand who he is. In this seven-day devotion series, Simon Smart helps us to explore that identity and much of what is entailed in Jesus as “the Messiah, the Son of God” and Lord of all things – Lord of the physical creation, the spirit world, sickness and even Lord over death itself.
Reflection: Lord of the Spiritual World
There is real drama in the way Mark constructs his narrative as only gradually do the key characters in the story come to understand who Jesus is. However, the impure spirits and the demons are the ones who, right from the beginning, recognise Jesus as the “Holy One of God,” with the authority to destroy them. It’s chilling that these spirits know immediately the identity of the one who has come to establish his kingdom, while others remain in the dark. (See Chapter 5:1 – 20 also).
Jesus begins to demonstrate authority in his teaching, that will draw many to him, and here in chapter 1, Mark begins to reveal that Jesus is Lord over the spirit world.
It’s a spiritual battle that Jesus wages, and his followers are in that battle too. Do you find comfort from the knowledge that victory in that battle is assured?
Prayer:
Jesus, you are the Lord of all things, including the spirit world. Please reassure me of your victory and give me confidence and strength as I follow you wherever you lead. Amen.
