Reflection:
“Peace to those on whom his favour rests” is quite a statement. Augustine described peace as “the tranquillity of order” and joy as “the happy experience of that order.” When we experience peace with God, there is a tranquillity of order between us and him.
The Bible says, “we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1). Knowing that everything is in order between you and God is part of the enjoyment of God’s favour. Jesus makes all things right, because he has given his life so that we can be forgiven and made right with God.
“Peace on those on whom his favour rests” is also a statement about peace within. Peace with God is different from “the peace of God which transcends all understanding” (Phil 4:7). This is the peace that guards our hearts and minds because everything is in order between us and God. The favour of God helps to quell the storms that can rage within us. Simply knowing that we are known, we are loved, and that our life matters, is part of the joyous experience of the favour of God.
Prayer:
God in Heaven, thank you that there is peace for those on whom your favour rests. Help me this day to enjoy the experience of peace with you, and also, peace within. Thank you for Jesus. Amen.
