Reflections: Calls to return
The people of Israel find themselves living in the ongoing tension between who they are called to be as God’s people and the temptations to live like everyone else. God continues to call them back to himself, his ways, and his heart. God sends his prophets to speak his words, pointing out the people’s sin and announcing the coming consequences if they will not listen, but promising hope and restoration if they will worship him alone and live out his word in justice and righteousness. Jeremiah warns the people that the external symbols of their faith cannot save them. He warns them of the coming exile, but as always promises redemption if they will repent and return their hearts to the Lord.
Questions: In what ways is God calling you back to himself, and to his heart for justice? When have you been tempted to put your trust in the external things of your faith rather than in the Lord himself?
Prayers: Forgiving God, thank you for always being willing to call people back to yourself. Show me where my heart needs to be re-aligned with yours.
