Reflections: A new King for a new day
The New Testament opens with a genealogy, which functions as a brief re-cap of the story so far, clearly linking Jesus to all the promises and hopes of the Old Testament. After Jesus is baptised by John and resists temptation by the devil in the wilderness, he commences his ministry in the towns and villages around Galilee. He bursts onto the scene with the announcement that God’s kingdom has come near, and then through his preaching and teaching, and his actions of fellowship and healing, he lives out and demonstrates the nature of this kingdom to those around him. The invitation to his disciples is to follow him, that is, to walk in his footsteps. They can participate in the kingdom life that he has come to proclaim and they too can make known its invitation to others.
Questions: How do you respond to Jesus’ announcement of the arrival of God’s kingdom? What does it look like for you to follow him day by day?
Prayers: King Jesus, thank you for your life and teaching and the way they demonstrate the new life of the kingdom and its invitation to all. Lead me in following you with my words and actions so that through my life others might see and hear the invitation too.
