Reflection:

The parable of the prodigal son is perhaps one of the most memorable and most often preached parables of Jesus. There is such richness to the story. Even more so when we consider the insights found by different cultures. I remember hearing the story of a pastor teaching this parable to two different classes of seminary students in two different parts of the world, who brought different perspectives to the parable’s lesson. One focused on the fact that the son had wasted all his father’s money in wild living. The other focused on the fact that he had separated himself from family and community and tried to live independently. Of course, both insights have something to teach us.

In the same way, each time a new language receives a Bible translation, there is a new opportunity for the work of theology to happen – the meeting of the Scriptures with the perspectives and experiences of a people group in a specific time and place. And that means there is the possibility for more discoveries about what God reveals about himself to humanity through his word. Bible translation enriches theology, then, for all believers around the world.

God, thank you for the gift of your word. Thank you for the richness of discovering who you are and your love for us as our heavenly Father. Today, may I and every believer worldwide encounter you in new ways through the Scriptures.  Amen.
