14 day plan

Peace with God

Day 12 of 14

CEV

Isaiah 55:8-12

8The Lord says:

“My thoughts and my ways

are not like yours.

9Just as the heavens

are higher than the earth,

my thoughts and my ways

are higher than yours.

10 “Rain and snow fall from the sky.

But they don't return

without watering the earth

that produces seeds to plant

and grain to eat.

11That's how it is with my words.

They don't return to me

without doing everything

I send them to do.”

God's People Will Celebrate

12When you are set free,

you will celebrate

and travel home in peace.

Mountains and hills will sing

as you pass by,

and trees will clap.

There’s probably not been a single day since the birth of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, when all the world has been at peace – where’s there’s been no war or conflict or distress of any sort.  Poverty, hunger and injustice still overwhelm much of humanity. Dictators and psychopathic maniacs and evil regimes still wreak terror and destruction across the globe and there’s no improvement in sight.  That’s the reality we live with so we have to find peace somewhere when we think about the world and our future lest we become totally fearful and anxious.

Human sin and evil weren’t overcome with Jesus’ birth – but the potential for and the promise of that in the future was.  Does that make the here and now totally depressing? Not at all, but it’s in our anticipation of all that can and ultimately will be, that we can best find beauty and peace in the present.  Today’s verses remind me that I don’t have to entirely understand our world and all that troubles it and that ultimately God is in control. He will accomplish what he desires and achieve his purposes, and in knowing and believing that, I can find peace and even joy in the circumstances of today with his promise of that coming to full fruition in the time to come.  N. T. Wright expresses this beautifully: “The world is beautiful not just because it hauntingly reminds us of its creator but also because it is pointed forward: it is designed to be filled, flooded, drenched in God, as a chalice is beautiful not least for what we know it is designed to contain or as a violin is beautiful not least because we know the music of which it is capable.“

Question: What will it take for you to ‘go out in joy and be led forth in peace’?  Where can you find beauty?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, your thoughts are not my thoughts and your ways are higher than mine.  That much I know! I pray you will help me to understand….or help me to accept the truth and wisdom of simply knowing these things and to look to the beauty of which this world is capable.  Amen.

Isaiah 55:1-13

The Lord's Invitation

1 If you are thirsty,

come and drink water!

If you don't have any money,

come, eat what you want!

Drink wine and milk

without paying a cent.

2 Why waste your money

on what really isn't food?

Why work hard for something

that doesn't satisfy?

Listen carefully to me,

and you will enjoy

the very best foods.

3 Pay close attention!

Come to me and live.

I will promise you

the eternal love and loyalty

that I promised David.

4I made him the leader and ruler

of the nations;

he was my witness to them.

5You will call out to nations

you have never known.

And they have never known you,

but they will come running

because I am the Lord,

the holy God of Israel,

and I have honored you.

God's Words Are Powerful

6Turn to the Lord!

He can still be found.

Call out to God! He is near.

7Give up your evil ways

and your evil thoughts.

Return to the Lord our God.

He will be merciful

and forgive your sins.

8The Lord says:

“My thoughts and my ways

are not like yours.

9Just as the heavens

are higher than the earth,

my thoughts and my ways

are higher than yours.

10 “Rain and snow fall from the sky.

But they don't return

without watering the earth

that produces seeds to plant

and grain to eat.

11That's how it is with my words.

They don't return to me

without doing everything

I send them to do.”

God's People Will Celebrate

12When you are set free,

you will celebrate

and travel home in peace.

Mountains and hills will sing

as you pass by,

and trees will clap.

13Cypress and myrtle trees

will grow in fields

once covered by thorns.

And then those trees will stand

as a lasting witness

to the glory of the Lord.
