Reflection: Anna
For further reading see Luke 2:22-40
When Jesus is presented at the temple as a child, two people prophesy, Simeon and Anna. Anna is specifically referred to as a prophet, meaning she was known as one prior to this. Anna is a wonderful example of a well-lived life, one in which she continues to serve God into advanced age. She prophesies, prays, fasts, and worships. Out of this life comes a closeness to God which means that when she sees Jesus, she immediately knows who he is. It seems she also understands his central place in God’s plan, because we are told she “spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem”. There is deep blessing to the church in those women and men who have lived long lives of faithfulness. It is an encouragement to see the fruit resulting from each day of taking up your cross and following Jesus.
Question: How can the church take hold of the wisdom of those with many years of faith, both women and men?
Prayer: Lord, sometimes a faithful life seems like a constant slog. Give me the perseverance that leads to character and hope. Amen
