Roots, Shoots & Fruits

Day 8 of 14

NIV

Isaiah 35:1-2

The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy. The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendour of Carmel and Sharon; they will see the glory of the Lord, the splendour of our God.

Reflection

Years ago, I saw an incredible documentary featuring time-lapse footage of the Australian desert after rainfall. The harsh, orange landscape was almost instantaneously transformed by greenery and  blooms of every imaginable colour. Lake Eyre filled with water and became an instant haven for a plethora of wildlife. The transformation had to be seen to be believed!

At times, our spiritual lives may feel like a desert. Perhaps you have been worn down by other Christians who have valued their need to be “right” above love for others or haven’t cared about the things you see as of paramount importance. Maybe life has brought such relentless hardship, pain, conflict and grief that joy – in the Lord or in anything – feels impossible. If your life is currently a “desert,” have faith in God to be the bringer of rains that enable you to blossom once again.

Question

How have you seen God at work in your life during hard times? In what ways are you “blossoming” at this time?

Prayer

Loving God, thank you that however big my struggles may seem, you are greater. Help me to seek you in both the good times and the hard times and to walk faithfully with you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
